...cause if thats its pinky....its either much lower than the other fingers at the base, or the wrapping of the bandages and the rather large "ball" at the base of the finger is creating the illusion of it being a thumb

it is its thumb. the palm is facing upwards, and if you mimic its position you will find your thumb and hand facing the same direction.
